Will a bad air compressor in my 1999 Taurus disable the car?

I just got my alternator changed and the belt above the Air compressor changed. A week later my car air compressor went bad. Now every time I turn on the air (ac or heat def.) the compressor makes this grinding noise. So I turn it off. It's been 2 more weeks and now im hearing this clicking sound as the belt goes around. I was told I would need to put another $300-$500 and I don't wanna pay if the car can still get me from A to B.
