Is it stupid to want to paint a mahogany antique dresser white?

my boyfriend inherited a gorgeous antique dresser made in mahogany wood and has said i can have it, i dont like the dark wood i think its really old fashioned and i would like to paint it white, my boyfriend thinks its stupid because it is potentially quite valuble and it will ruin its value by painting it but i think it would look so beautiful painted white in our bedroom. what do you think?
